The
Sudan School mascot changed from “Buffaloes” to “Hornets” in 1930.
The early football teams stored their uniforms and then dressed
behind the stage in the old Sudan High School. After dressing,
they would run out into the gym (which later became the auditorium)
sounding like a “thundering herd of buffaloes.” The boys wanted
“Thundering Herd of Buffaloes” on their football jackets; however,
the superintendent said it was too much to put on their jackets.
So it was shortened to just “Buffaloes.” Supt. W. I. Wilkins
suggested the name “Hornets” as the mascot in 1930.
