Sudan Mascot Change

George Vinson bought land near Sudan one year prior to moving to Sudan. His neighbor, Mr. Edwin Pope, in Harmon County, Oklahoma had recently bought land near Sudan and urged George to buy land there also. Both men were farmers.

Verdie Vinson’s mother, Elvina, died when Verdie was two years old. She had two sisters, Thelma and Jewel, who helped to raise her. Mrs. Maud Fay Pope was a second mother to Verdie.

Verdie, her dad, two sisters, and one brother came to Sudan in a four door Overland sedan. They arrived on February 2, 1926. She said, “It was a very nice day to move out here.” The winter was very mild. One other brother and a brother-in-law drove two horse drawn wagons filled with their household goods and farm equipment. That trip required three days to reach Sudan.

TractorGeorge Vinson farmed for two years. Due to the dry weather, there were no crops to sell and he let the farm go back to the land company. Verdie and her brothers moved a sister and her family from Hollis, Oklahoma to this area at about the same time the farmland was returned.Doty's garage

The first day of school for Verdie was a very sad day—no friendly faces of friends. Two weeks later, the L.T. Hunt family from Hollis moved to Sudan. Lillian and Mildred Hunt enrolled in the local school, which thrilled Verdie and Thelma. Mr. Hunt was a barber in Hollis and Sudan. Verdie completed the eighth grade in Sudan before dropping out of school to keep house for her dad.

Verdie Vinson married Delma Gann August 7, 1929 in Clovis, New Dema Gann Mexico. They had three children, a baby who died at seven months, LaFern and D.L. They both graduated from Sudan High School. LaFern Gann married J.C. Doty in December 1950. Their two children, Vickie and Craig are both Sudan High graduates. Craig’s daughter, Kimberly graduated from Sudan High in 2001, and Chance is an elementary student.

J.C. Doty died January 1995 and is buried in the Sudan Cemetery. D.L. married Martha Dudley shortly after they graduated in 1953 from SHS.

Delma Gann died in January 1980 and is also buried in the Sudan Cemetery. Verdie still resides in Sudan. She loves to quilt with the ladies at the Sudan Senior Citizens Center each week.
